Causes of Tongue Cancer and Important Risk Factors to Know

Not many people know what causes cancer of the tongue or anything that can increase the risk of tongue cancer. This type of cancer is more often experienced by men aged over 60 years. One of the triggers is smoking. Cancer of the tongue can begin with the appearance of lumps or canker sores that do not heal. In my opinion, the initial symptoms of tongue cancer are not typical, so it is often only realized after the condition is severe enough.

Causes of Tongue Cancer and Risk Factors for Tongue Cancer

Aloe cancer occurs due to genetic mutations in the cells of the tongue. This causes the growth and development of cells on the tongue to be uncontrolled. The cause of the genetic mutation is not known with certainty, but there are some things that are known to increase the risk of the emergence of tongue cancer, namely:

1. Heredity factors

Someone whose parents have had oral cancer or tongue cancer will be more at risk of developing tongue cancer. Usually tongue cancer with hereditary risk factors will appear at a young age.

2. Smoking habits

Smoking can increase the risk of developing oral cancer, including cancer of the tongue. Toxins in cigarette smoke can weaken the immune system, making it difficult for the body to fight cancer cells. In addition, substances contained in cigarettes can also damage body cells and trigger cancer.

3. Excessive consumption of alcoholic beverages

Besides smoking, the next cause of cancer of the tongue is the habit of consuming alcoholic beverages. About 70-80% of patients with tongue cancer have a history of consuming alcoholic drinks that are routine and in excessive amounts.

4. Lazy to maintain oral hygiene

Several studies have shown that poorly maintained oral hygiene also plays a role in increasing the risk of tongue cancer. The reason, poor oral hygiene can change the nature of good germs in the mouth and cells on the tongue. Even so, this is still a matter of controversy.

5. Consuming less vegetables and fruit

The content of carotenoids in vegetables and fruits is believed to reduce the risk of oral cancer, including cancer of the tongue. That is why, less consumption of fruits and vegetables is said to cause tongue cancer.

6. Infected by HPV

HPV infection or human pappilomavirus can be transmitted through direct skin contact. Transmission of germ infections in the oral cavity can occur through oral sex with people infected with HPV. HPV infection in the mouth is known to trigger changes in cells in the mouth, so it can develop into cancer. If you have one of the risk factors above and experience complaints in the form of canker sores or sores on the tongue that don't heal, or feel a lump in the tongue, immediately do a doctor's examination.

Some Fish Oil for Pregnant Women Endangers the Fetus

The assumption that has circulated so far is that consuming fish oil for pregnant women brings positive benefits, including to help the baby's brain and eye development. However, in fact this claim still needs further investigation. Fish oil contains omega-3 fatty acids EPA and DHA which are important for supporting the body's metabolism. Fish oil for pregnant women is recommended because it is claimed to be better than consuming high-risk fish meat containing mercury. Mercury is stored in fish meat or protein, not in the part of fat where fish oil comes from. Fish oil supplements for pregnant women can be recommended as long as the reasons are clear. For example, the mother's body still lacks omega-3 even though it has consumed a variety of food sources of these nutrients.
